At 14, William had to leave school because his family could no longer afford his school fees. But he continued learning through books from his village library.
One day, he discovered information about wind turbines in a book. He then decided to build one himself.
Using bicycle parts and other discarded materials, William built a wind turbine capable of generating electricity for his home. It could power light bulbs and radios, among other things. 💡
His story became known around the world and was told in his book, “The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind.”
Later, projects using solar energy also helped his community, including a solar-powered pump to provide access to clean drinking water.
Today, William continues to support young inventors in Malawi through the Moving Windmills Project.
His story shows that a great idea can start with very limited resources. With curiosity, creativity and perseverance, we can find solutions to the problems we face in our everyday lives.
