Ethiopia: The African empire that never surrendered
In this new episode of History…Tells!, ANAKids explores Ethiopia, an African country famous for its unique history. During the colonial era in Africa, Ethiopia managed to remain independent and became a symbol of resistance across the continent.
Ethiopia is one of the oldest states in the world. Located in the Horn of Africa, the country has a history stretching back thousands of years. In the late 19th century, while many European powers were colonizing Africa, the Ethiopian Empire resisted Italian invasions.
In 1896, Emperor Menelik II’s army won the famous Battle of Adwa against Italy. The victory became a major historical moment for Africa and inspired many African independence movements.
Ethiopia was occupied for a few years by Italy between 1936 and 1941 under Benito Mussolini’s fascist regime before regaining its independence. Today, the country remains a symbol of African pride and resistance.
In this new episode of History…Tells!, children discover how Ethiopia became one of Africa’s greatest symbols of freedom.
