Made in Africa – Does Chocolate Come from Africa?
Chocolate is enjoyed all around the world, but do you know where the cocoa used to make it comes from? In this new episode of Made in Africa, children discover Africa’s important role in the chocolate story.
Cocoa, the main ingredient used to make chocolate, originally comes from the Americas. However, Africa plays a major role in cocoa production today. African countries such as Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana are among the world’s largest producers of cocoa beans.
Cocoa beans grow on cocoa trees that need a warm and humid climate. After harvesting, the beans are fermented, dried and then processed to create the cocoa used in chocolate production.
Through this episode, Made in Africa helps young readers follow the journey of cocoa, from the farm to the chocolate we enjoy, while highlighting the important work of African cocoa producers.
